Choosing Our Wedding Location - ITALY!
Back in March of 2017 Dave proposed to me on our dock one evening and it is a moment I will forever cherish. We have been to a few weddings over the past couple of years so thankfully I haven't found wedding planning too stressful as I already had some rough ideas that I knew I wanted for our big day.
One thing that we always toyed with was the idea of a destination wedding. I know...why would you want a destination wedding when you live in Bermuda but I LOVED the idea of everyone being on vacation. No one has to worry about running into work for a couple of hours, going to check in on their dog or any of their usual day to day activities. Instead everyone can relax and enjoy the days leading up to the wedding. Initially we were going to get married here - we had chosen a location and we had even paid a deposit for the band! But the more I thought about it, the more I really wanted to do a destination wedding. In 2016 we had our first big (non-US) trip together to Italy for my cousin's wedding and I fell in love with it. Not only is it a stunning country but the people are lovely and they have all my favourite things - bread, pasta, and most importantly prosecco. My late mother also wanted to re-marry there one day so I have always had a special spot in my heart for Italy - I guess you could say it is a Sweet Spot for me 😉
I knew if I pitched it right to Dave we could make it happen. So this entailed me doing A LOT of research. Thank goodness for the Internet or else this definitely wouldn't have happened. Once I had narrowed it down to 3 options Dave and I sat down and went through the list to figure out what we thought was best for us.
Villa Pizzo, Lake Como
This was a top contender for me! It was so stunning and every bit of it screamed romance! To hire the venue for your wedding is actually quite reasonable but once you add in your meals, flowers, photographers etc. the price was a bit over our budget. Also, we were unable to find a place near by that not only we could stay in over the weekend but that would also fit our immediate families, wedding party and their significant others. These were 2 of the main factors as to why we didn't go with this option but I highly recommend checking it out if you are looking for possible venues in Lake Como.
Conti di San Bonifacio, Tuscany
Again, this location looked so beautiful and so close to what we were wanting. It had a pool for a welcome pool party, a vineyard, and some of the most lovely views. But similar to Villa Pizzo we could not accommodate everyone that we wanted to stay with us.
Castello di Meleto, Tuscany
This is where we decided to get married!! When I was doing my research I reached out to my friend Emma who had been to a wedding the summer before in Tuscany. She highly recommended Castello di Meleto and said how lovely it was. After doing some Internet scooping I reached out to the venue and started to discuss details further. This location ticked too many boxes that we would have been silly not to choose it. Leading up to our wedding and I am sure for a few posts after, I will be writing a lot about Castello di Meleto so I won't go on about it but for all future destination brides this should be on the top of your list!!
I have quite a few ideas for future wedding posts so I will end it here but thank you for reading this post! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments - I would love to hear from any other destination brides! Comment below or shoot me a message on my Instagram page @thesweetspotblog.
